“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Ephesians 6:10-11 Temptation is inevitable in the life of every believer. As followers of Christ, we are not exempt from the attacks of Satan – on the contrary, we become even bigger targets, because Satan hates those who worship God. The Bible tells us he prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. As we go throughout our everyday lives, it can be hard to recognize that there is a war being waged over our souls and if we’re not careful, we can play right into the traps that the enemy sets for us. So how can we defend ourselves against spiritual attacks? Ephesians 6 tells us the answer: Put on the whole armor of God. Paul mentions six key components to the armor of God. Each one is distinct, yet vitally important. The Belt of Truth Satan is known as the Father of Lies. His main strategy is to twist the truth in order to make us doubt the goodness of God. These lies can be convincing; Satan writes them specifically to appeal to our flesh. So how do we ensure that we are rooted in the truth? One powerful method of defense is to read scripture. God’s Word is the only source of absolute truth in this changing world. Nothing the devil says can negate what God has already established to be true. Meditate on the Word daily. Journal it. Sing it through spiritual songs. Speak it in encouragement to one another. Saturate your mind with the truth so that when Satan tries to ensnare you with a lie, you can turn it right back on him. The Breastplate of Righteousness What does it mean to be righteous? One definition is simply this: to do the will of God. To obey His commands. To reject what we know to be wrong and to pursue what He has told us is right. Sometimes, God’s will is easily recognizable. But at other times, the right thing to do can be obscured by our wants and desires, by false teachers, and by the wicked counsel of this world. In those moments, we can seek righteousness in two ways: Firstly, by reading scripture, as we’ve discussed before. Secondly, by asking God Himself to reveal His will. Through prayer, we have direct access to the Father and when we ask Him for guidance, He will never deny that to us. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace Shoes symbolize readiness – readiness to move, readiness to act upon a specific motivator. If you have truly grasped the wonder of the gospel, then it will always move you to action. Once we have encountered the grace of God and tasted of His goodness, we cannot remain in a life of sin and rebellion. We are motivated to flee sin and run towards God. The idea of our old life becomes repulsive to us, and the idea of obeying God becomes gloriously attractive. So whenever we are tempted, we can fix our eyes on the gospel. We can remember the price that Jesus paid to set us free from the chains of sin and as we do, our feet will begin to move. The Shield of Faith Faith is a crucial theme throughout the entire Bible. Hebrews says that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Matthew says that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains and so, the fact that faith is symbolized here as a shield is fitting. Unlike the other pieces of armor, shields can be used to protect your entire body. In a moment of attack, when all else fails us, we need only to have faith. We need only to cry out to God and believe that He will rescue us. He will cover us from head to toe. Our greatest defense is a deep trust and reliance on His power to save. The Helmet of Salvation The helmet is one of the most critical pieces of armor, because it protects the most vulnerable part of our bodies. It is the piece that ties everything together. According to Ephesians, the spiritual equivalent of a helmet is the salvation we have in Jesus Christ. When we stand firm in our salvation, all the devil’s threats become empty and meaningless. If we have put our faith in Jesus as the sacrifice for our sins, then there is nothing that can snatch us from His hand. What God has already declared cannot be undone. The cross has the final word. The Sword of the Spirit In this passage, Paul tells us clearly what the Sword of the Spirit represents: the Word of God. As we’ve already seen, the Word is a common thread throughout every part of the armor of God and when we consider its immense power, that should come as no surprise. Hebrews tells us that the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword. It is interesting to note that this is the only offensive piece mentioned in the Armor of God. In fact, the Sword is not truly a piece of armor at all. It is a powerful weapon by which we can pierce through Satan’s ranks and tear down his lies. One word from God is strong enough to drive out all the legions of hell. Each of these pieces individually is not enough to fully protect us from spiritual attacks. It is when we put on the full Armor of God that we are able to withstand any temptation. Every day, we should be cultivating our relationship with Christ so that when the day of trouble comes, we have each of these tools at the ready. Remember: God is faithful, and He will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear , 1 Corinthians 10:13.

Literally, atonement is the action of making amends for a wrong or injury. It is the concept of a person taking action to correct previous wrongdoing on their part or some other expression of feelings of remorse. It is repayment, reparation, restitution, redress or redemption of sin. The activity involved in the reconciliation of two opposing parties can be referred to as atonement. This was what Jesus did for us by atoning for our sins. He reconciled mankind back to God. He repaired the damaged relationship between us and God caused by sin and reconnected us back to God. This is why He is called the mediator or the intermediary between man and God. Sin had had driven a wedge between us and God. We became separated from God when Adam (consequently all men) broke God’s commandment. The cordial relationship between us and God was broken. We lost our confidence and boldness to approach God. Adam had to hide from God’s presence because of sin. Since then, man had been seeking to get back to God just as God had been seeking to restore us to Himself. But it was impossible until Jesus came. In what ways did Jesus atone for our sins? He atoned with His Blood and Body: Throughout the Old Testament, blood had to be shed in order to remove sin. Hebrews 9:22 says, “Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Since sin was the reason for the broken relationship between us and God and sin is removed through the shedding of blood, Jesus had to shed His blood to atone for our sins. In Jesus’ own words, on the night before He was crucified while He ate with the disciples, He said, “…for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:28 He atoned with His cross: The kind of death that Jesus died was also critical to the atonement of our sins. He didn’t die by accident or a sickness or disease. He had to die on the cross. The cross was a capital punishment for executing criminals in those days and Jesus had to die on it as a sign that He was a criminal bearing our sins. If He had died through other means, He may not have atoned for our sins. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.” Galatians 3:13 He atoned with His life: The scriptures recorded that Jesus actually died. A man may shed his blood, get injured in his body but may not die. Jesus died. He gave up His life. Matthew 27:50 says, “Jesus again gave a loud cry and breathed his last.” In other words, He died. He became lifeless. He was even buried. This was also part of the atonement. His life was given as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 He atoned for the nature of sin, not just the acts of sin. We often think in terms of the acts of sin but sin is much deeper than the activities. The acts of sin are indications or manifestations of the nature of sin. Jesus went beyond dealing with the acts of sin, He destroyed the nature of sin. He annihilated the tree that produces the fruits of sin. This is why He didn’t have to shed His blood again. Romans 6:6 say, “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.” The atonement was once and for all. In the Old Testament, blood was shed whenever a man commits a sin. Hundreds of goats, rams, bulls and birds were killed daily as people came to confess and seek a redress for their sins. This is why priests had a full time job. They were busy attending to several people who needed to get right with God after they had sinned. But Jesus put an end to that. He did it once and for all. The blood he shed once was enough to take care of all sins. Hebrews 9:12 says, “He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.” The atonement was completed in His resurrection. The shedding of blood, the wounding of His body and Jesus’ death would have been useless if He didn’t come back to life on the third day. Our atonement was perfected when Jesus resurrected. 1 Corinthians 15:16-18 says, “And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost!” So, His resurrection perfected the remission of our sins. Jesus Christ was the only one qualified to carry out the atonement for the sins of all mankind. He knew no sin. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 We need someone who had the right to come before God and can fulfill the demands for justice and stand in our place to bear the consequences of sin. Jesus was capable and because of His atonement, all people will be resurrected, and those who obey His gospel will receive the gift of eternal life with God.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 All of us have doubts from time to time. This world is full of tragedies that can cause us to wonder if God is truly good or if He even exists. But as we grow deeper in our walk with Christ, we learn to let go of that doubt and trust in Him. As we go through life, it can be hard to watch our non-believing friends struggle with that same doubt. As Christians, we are called to be a light to the world around us; we are meant to come alongside hurting people and point them toward the love of Christ. So how can we help them to overcome their doubts and come to faith in Jesus? First, we can share our testimonies. We should talk openly and honestly about how God has worked in our lives. When someone is in a place of doubt, they don’t need a list of facts, statistics, and scientific evidence to convince them. They need to hear the experiences of real people who were once in their shoes. We’re just as imperfect as they are, and yet God had mercy on us. Jude 1:22 commands us, “And have mercy on those who doubt.” What would it look like if instead of judging non-believers, we treated them with the compassion that God has showed us? Another vitally important thing we can do is encourage our friends to keep digging deeper into the hard questions of life. It’s all too easy to dismiss the questions we don’t have answers to or to act like those questions aren’t valid. We should use our knowledge of scripture to answer what we can and provide resources for them to study on their own: and that includes the Bible. Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes through hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Ultimately, the only thing that can change a heart is the Word of God. Pray that the Holy Spirit would open their hearts and minds as they seek the answers to their doubts. Finally, we should live out what we believe. As followers of Christ, we are meant to be imitators of Him in every way. The goal is to live a life so authentically rich toward God that the world is amazed. Every time we choose faithfulness, every time we choose obedience, we are a living testimony to those around us. We may not realize it, but our non-believing peers are watching us. They’re wondering what it is that makes us different. They’re wondering why we’re so joyful, why we’re so hopeful, and why the doubts they struggle with have no hold on us. If we want others to come to faith in Christ, we must first live like that faith is real. Pursue Christ, and love His children. The rest will fall in place.

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 Forgiveness is an easy idea to preach, but a hard one to practice. When we are betrayed and hurt by people we once trusted, it can be difficult to simply turn the other cheek. But all throughout the Bible, we are told that forgiveness is an essential part of our new life in Christ. If we truly believe that God is sovereign over all, then we will obey His command to forgive. If we trust Him, He will help us to replace our grudges with love. But how? First, our belief helps us to forgive because we understand how God forgave us. We constantly make mistakes and fail to measure up to God’s plan for our lives, each and every day and yet, He loves us anyway. He is always willing to take us back into His arms and set us on the right path again. If a holy God can forgive sinners like us, then how much more can we forgive those who do wrong to us? Matthew 6:14-15 says, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Jesus died for all of our sins; this is undeniably true but, He expects us to give the same love to others as He showed toward us. When we forgive, we reflect the awesome power of Christ in us. If we believe in God, then we also believe that He knows our hearts. If our hearts are full of anger and bitterness, then how can we claim to love God? 1 John 4:20 says, “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.” Regardless of how great the offense was, hatred is never justified. Jesus came to bring love and light to the world, in His kingdom, there is no room for hatred. Sometimes we need to take a step back and remind ourselves that our lives should always be centered around love in every situation. 1 Peter 4:8 says, “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.” Do we truly believe that love is enough to cover every sin? Do we believe that there is no cut too deep to be healed? If we do, then it will radically change the way that we live. We are called to forgive not once, not twice, but an infinite number of times. The more that we love God, the more we learn to love those around us even our enemies. When we have faith, the same God who forgave us will enable us to forgive others. Why Do Christians and Non Christians Need Help From God?

“Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.” Acts 10:34 It is not an easy thing for people to view each other equally. Even though our society pretends to be all about equality and acceptance, the truth is that we are guilty of partiality, each and every day. We judge by appearance – who would you trust more, a man in a suit or a biker outfit? We judge by wealth – would you be more likely to hang out with a company CEO or the homeless person on the street? We judge by so many other worldly criteria that in the end this does not reflect the most important part of us – the heart. Thankfully, God does not see us as we see each other. He sees us and loves us all equally. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The key word here is all. It doesn’t say that some have sinned, but that all of us – rich or poor, young or old, male or female – have failed to measure up. This means that no one can claim to better than another person. We are all far from the perfection of God, and therefore we are all equally in need of a Savior. This truth should humble us and remind us that every person we interact with is essentially just like us – broken, imperfect, and desperate for redemption. The good news is that though we all are sinners, we all are the recipients of God’s love. Consider 2 Corinthians 5:15: “And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again.” Jesus didn’t just die for the successful, righteous people who go to church every Sunday, He died for the last, the lost, and the least – even those who might never love Him back. His love for humanity does not favor one sinner over another; He invites everyone to accept Him as their Savior and receive the gift of eternity with Him. Finally, we are all made in the image of God. He gave us all the ability to think, to create, to destroy, and to feel complex emotions – on a level that nothing else in creation can do. Even though we are all unique, with different strengths and weaknesses, we are all valuable in the Kingdom of God. It doesn’t matter what our gender, skin color, or socioeconomic status is; “the rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all” Proverbs 22:2. So, since we are each treasured by God without discrimination, perhaps we should extend the same all-inclusive attitude toward our peers.
