There have been different schools of thought on whether it is appropriate to celebrate Christmas or not. Some have said that December 25 is not the actual birthday of Jesus Christ. Others say that Christmas day used to be a day dedicated to the celebration of a heathen god. Irrespective of the biases we might have about the celebration of Christmas, the fact is that Christmas has come to stay among the majority of Christian folks around the world. While it is true that there is the tendency to celebrate Christ without Christ indulging in emotional blackmail and man-made traditions, it is also true that for most Christians, Christmas is a season to celebrate Jesus Christ. The word “Christmas” actually means the celebration of Christ and this should be our primary focus. “One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.” Romans 14:5-6 Here are some reasons Christians celebrate Christmas: Christians celebrate Christmas because it reminds them of God’s unconditional love. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” There was nothing in us deserving love. We sinned against God, spat on his face and denied Him. We fail to live up to His expectations yet in our most deplorable state, He sent His Son to die for our sins. Christmas is a season that reminds and reveals to us the true definition of love unlike the worldly perspective of love which selfish, conditional and emotional. “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:7-8 We should never forget that without His birth, there would not be His death. Christians celebrate Christmas because it reminds them of God’s sacrificial giving. It is a season to commemorate the greatest gift God ever gave to man – His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. This is actually the true essence of Christmas. We always think of giving when there is excess but God had only one Son yet He gave Him up for us. He sacrificed Him for our sake. He didn’t hold on to Him. This is why we must commit our own lives also to sacrificial giving; going out of our way to make others comfortable. Christians celebrate Christmas because it commemorates the beginning of the end of the greatest problem of man – sin. The birth of Jesus brought the final solution to the issue of sin. Matthew 1:21 says, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name of Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.” Sin drove a wedge between us and God. We became separated. We lost the intimate fellowship we had with God but through the birth of Jesus, a solution came. Jesus removes and saves us from our sins. Hence, we can go back to God like it used to be. In Christ, we are redeemed and reconciled back to God. This is the purpose of His coming to destroy the works of the devil which is sin. If we still live in sin then the purpose is not achieved and our celebration is in vain. We should never be lost in the euphoria of celebration at the expense of the essence. Jesus Christ is the focus! Anything we do apart from Him is nothing.

For most people, especially in the West and other parts of the world, Christmas is one of the most important Christian and cultural holidays of the year. Every year, as the fall gives way to winter and the snow covers the ground with flashy lights on our streets and decorated Christmas trees from house to house, you know that Christmas is around the corner. Most people dress in reds, exchange gifts, feast and do all kinds of things to mark and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Yes! The true meaning of Christmas, for Christians, is the celebration of the Savior, Jesus Christ. However, one of the downsides of a routine is the tendency to lose the essence of the practice and get carried away in the motion of simply keeping up with tradition. One can be lost in the euphoria of celebration at the expense of the essence of the celebration. This is becoming true of Christmas as folks do things that contradict the person and the values of Christ in the name of celebrating Christ. Such contradictory practices call for a great contemplation on the real essence of Christmas celebration. What is the true meaning of Christmas? What does it mean exactly to celebrate Jesus Christ on Christmas? Is it the gifts? Is it the annual economic boost? Is the celebration in the Christmas trees, the Christmas songs, the gifts and hamper exchanges or how our cities are lighted? Is there more to Christmas than all the euphoria that comes with it? Celebrating Jesus Christ on Christmas means celebrating everything that Jesus represents. These are some of the ways to look at what it means to celebrate Jesus Christ on Christmas: Celebrating Jesus Christ on Christmas is a remembrance of the reason He came to the world. The coming of Jesus was on purpose. Man had a problem – sin. It was a problem that none of the prophets or any of the laws could resolve until Jesus Christ came. When we celebrate Christ at Christmas, we commemorate the beginning of the end of this great problem of man – sin. Matthew 1:21 says, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Christmas is empty if we are not saved from sin because the purpose of His coming is not accomplished in our lives. It means His coming is in vain since we have not aligned our lives to this great purpose of God. Are you saved from sin? Celebrating Jesus Christ on Christmas is a call to consecration. If we claim to know, belong to or even identify with Him, we cannot live carelessly. While we shouldn’t isolate ourselves from the world, we must not adopt the lifestyle or mentality of the world. Christmas brings to mind that Jesus came to save people who live in the world but are not of the world. Celebrating Jesus during Christmas without a life that strikingly reflects Him is a waste. Remember that those who name the name of the Lord must depart from iniquity. Celebrating Jesus Christ on Christmas is a reminder of God’s unconditional love to the world and the entire creation. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” We didn’t deserve God’s love yet he didn’t withhold it from us. Christmas reminds us and reveals to us the true definition of love. Unlike the world’s kind of love, God’s love is selfless and unconditional. “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die, yet perhaps for a good man, someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:7-8 Celebrating Jesus Christ on Christmas is a reflection of God’s magnanimity in giving up His only begotten Son as a propitiation for our sins. God didn’t just love us in words; He demonstrated it in giving us His only begotten son. Humans think of giving when they have excess but God had only one Son yet He gave Him up for us. He didn’t hold on to Him. Christmas means giving. We must go out of our way to give sacrificially so that others may live comfortably in the same way Jesus gave up His life to give us life. Celebrating Jesus Christ on Christmas should birth a hunger and a thirst in our hearts for more of God. As we celebrate Christmas, it ought to lead to a yearning in our hearts to experience more of the person and power of Christ. The truth is most Christians live far less than the realities that are written in God’s word. Sometimes, we often feel that some of the signs, wonders and glory experienced and written in the Bible are not meant for our generation yet Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do because I go to My Father.” John 14:12 After the shepherds received the message of the angels about the birth of Jesus, they didn’t just sit there. The message created a hunger in them. They didn’t want to base their faith on hearsay but on what they have seen and experienced. So, they said one to another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” Luke 2:15. Everything written in the word of God has come to pass but we may never see or experience them until we take proactive steps like the shepherds to seek Him out. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. If we didn’t see Him work in our lives as He did with the apostles and prophets, it is our fault. Celebrating Jesus Christ on Christmas is a reminder of the great commission. Even though Jesus came to save the world from sin, there are still many who have not known Him. Some have not even heard of Him. The harvest is still very large and laborers are few. Celebrating Him at Christmas should spur us to obey the great command to go into the entire world and preach the gospel Mark 16:15. One other beautiful thing the shepherds did after they saw Jesus was that “they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds” Luke 2:17-18. Christmas presents us with a unique opportunity to make Him widely known just like shepherds did. Celebrating Jesus Christ on Christmas is a reminder that He is coming back to this world. At Christmas, we celebrate His first coming to the world but He is no longer in the world physically though He dwells in us through His Holy Spirit. Soon, Jesus will come again a second time to consummate His marriage with the church, the redeemed. As we celebrate Christmas, we are reminded that He will soon be back for those who are ready for Him. There are Christians who believe it is inappropriate to celebrate Christmas as there are speculations that December 25 is not the actual birthday of Jesus. Others said Christmas day used to be a day dedicated to the celebration of a heathen god. Irrespective of the biases we might have about the celebration of Christmas, our priority should be to remain focused on the reason for the season which is Christ Himself. We should never lose sight of what it means to celebrate Jesus Christ at Christmas. We should live in the consciousness of His presence and person as we share gifts and express love to one another and the rest of the world.

Since the fall at the Garden of Eden, man has been looking for a way to get back into the relationship he had with God. This is the essence of salvation. Because of sin, the relationship was broken and the image of God that we used to have was destroyed. We became unfit and unworthy to approach a holy God. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23. Hence, we need to be redeemed and restored to who we used to be. Life is empty and boring and lifeless without God. There will always be a void; a vacuum and a lack of a sense of fulfilment when a man or woman has not found salvation in Christ Jesus. One may have all the money, fame and resources at his or her disposal but without a vital relationship with God and confident assurance of salvation, there will be gross insecurity in the soul of that man or woman. The question then is; how can we obtain this salvation? How is it made available to us? How can we access it? Through the Love of the Father. We can have salvation all because the Father loved us. This love was revealed almost immediately after the fall. It was revealed in His discipline of man, in ensuring that we did not eat the tree of life else we become irredeemable then in making animal skins to cover the nakedness of man. God would later release His only begotten to die for our sins. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” Obtaining salvation begins with an encounter with the Father’s unconditional love. Through the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. It would not be enough if it was just the Father that loved us, Jesus also brought grace. He willingly decided to become man and die for our sins. This was grace at work. The Scripture says, “…grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” John 1:17. We became saved and justified by His grace Romans 3:24; Ephesians 2:8. Through the Preaching of the Gospel. The good news of God’s provision for our salvation is the gospel and until a man or woman hears or learns about it, there is no hope of salvation. We can have salvation through the preaching of the gospel. Paul asked an important question in Romans 10:14, “And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” This is why he committed his life to the preaching of the gospel because people only have a chance at salvation when they hear it. Through our Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Despite the love of the Father and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ made available to every man and woman, many are not saved even after they have heard the gospel because they have not put their faith in Christ Jesus. We must believe in our heart the finished work of Christ on the cross before we can be saved. “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness…” Romans 10:9-10. Through the Confession of our Mouth. We must express our faith with our mouth. If we cannot confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, it might be that we don’t believe Him in our heart. Romans 10:9-10 says, “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.” Through our Continuous Fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Salvation doesn’t end at the moment when we believe with our heart and make a public confession with our mouth, we must continue to fellowship daily with the Holy Spirit who was given to us at salvation in God’s word and prayer. The absence of this is why so many people put their faith in Christ but soon continue to live the way they used to live before they came to Christ. You will soon begin to feel as if you were never saved if you do not make time out daily to fellowship with the Holy Spirit. This is indispensable. You are a newborn who needs to be fed and nourished in order to grow. Salvation is obtainable through the provision of God and the responsibility of men and women. There will not be salvation in the absence of any of the two. Fortunately, God has done His part. He has loved us and has expressed it in sending to us His only begotten son. Jesus died and rose again as a propitiation for our sins. No man or woman will be able to accuse God in eternity for losing his or her soul. The ball is in our court to willingly accept God’s provision for our salvation. “…Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” 2 Corinthians 6:2.

What many Christians know about God is that He is powerful and works miraculously. Psalm 92:5 “O Lord, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep.” The Bible also made it clear that our body is God’s temple and God is in us dwelling in our hearts. Knowing all these, Christians still find themselves asking the question, “how does God work in me if He dwells in me?” people want to know and be able to discern the work of God in them. There are different ways by which God works in us. By speaking to us John 10:27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” One of the ways that God shows His work in us is by speaking directly to us. There are different ways by which God speaks to us. He uses His word to speak to us. When we need things or want solutions to the problems we are facing – He comes and then gives the solution by speaking to us. Many people that needed saving, God uses us to help them too and He tells us the secrets, the things that must be done by these people to solve their problems. By strengthening our faith God strengthens our faith in Him and one way He does it is by doing the things we ask him in the name of Jesus. John 14:13 “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” The glorification of our Lord God is important and Jesus is promising that all we have to do is to ask Him whatever we need. When He answers us, it strengthens our faith in him and whenever we pray next time, we have the courage and the assurance to go to Him believing he will answer us because He works in us. Through the Holy Spirit The Holy is not just any spirit, He is the spirit of God that has been given to us by Him so we can experience the greater works of God. When Jesus was leaving, He promised the Holy Spirit and He said the Holy Spirit will teach all things. John 14:17. Teaching us all things means God is working in us and exposing the things that we need to know. The Holy Spirit ministers to us – it is through the Holy Spirit that the apostles got the power of God. It was through the Holy Spirit that they had the confidence to preach the word and perform miracles. Giving us the heart to serve Him It would be easier to say we want to work for God than taking action. Many people would love to work for God but not all end up doing that. It takes the spirit of God to have the heart of working for God and then keeping to it. Having the zeal to work for God makes us understand that it is God that is working in us. Through the spirit of confidence It is God who gives confidence to Him people to preach the good news. It takes the power of God in us to stand out and face people without fear. It takes an anointing to achieve this. The apostles were initially afraid of facing the world and telling them that they belong to Christ. Peter denied Jesus in this process. When they were anointed, the spirit of fear left them and they gained confidence. Luke 4:18. It is through this anointing that we get the spirit of confidence. 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind.” By providing Ephesians 3:20 “Now to Him who can do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” The power of God in us provides for all we need. When we ask from God, He surprises us by doing more than we have asked. This is why we were told in Mathew 6:25-34 not to worry about the things we will need tomorrow because the way God works is powerful and does not include worrying. He provides in a way that amazes us. Fulfilling His promises The promises of God to us are many and all of these promises, none would go without being fulfilled. He said in His word that He will nor leave us or forsake us. Deuteronomy 31:6. The plans that He has for us are good ones and He will fulfill them. Jeremiah 29:11. Through His power When we talk about the power of God in us, we are talking of possibilities, the ability to do all things in the name of Christ. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” When we lay hands on the sick and they receive their healing when we pray and answers come, when we see success in all we do, and when we get solutions to our problems, we know that the power of God works in us and through this we will do great exploits. How Do The Desires of Daily Living Take Control of Our Heart From God? Why Do Christians and Non Christians Need Help From God?

Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.” Romans 14:5-6 Here are some reasons Christians celebrate Christmas; Christians celebrate Christmas because it reminds them of God’s unconditional love. How Do The Desires of Daily Living Take Control of Our Heart From God?
This question is one that many people may be wondering about. Faith is belief and trust and loyalty to God. Faith is defined clearly in Hebrews 11.1, “now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” You may believe that you have faith but you are not sure how you have it and on the other hand you may think you don’t have any faith and you are unsure how you may be able to get faith. Did you know that God gives each and every one of us faith? Yes, he does. The Lord has designed each of us to have faith. In Romans 12.3, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you; do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgement, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” By having faith in God, it makes it possible for us to know that he can do anything for us that he believes is best. The Lord tells us that all we need to do is come to him and rely on him because he can do anything for us. Believing in God and having faith is so important, “and without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11.6 There are many examples in the Bible wherein the Lord healed many people due to faith. In Matthew 8.5-10, our Lord Jesus went to the city of Capernaum and an army officer asked the Lord to help his servant who was at the officer’s home in pain. The Lord told the officer that he would go to his home and heal his servant. The officer told Jesus that he was not worthy for him to go to his home and if the Lord commanded it, the officer believed that his servant would be healed. In verse 8.10, “when Jesus heard this, he was amazed. He said to those who were following him, I tell you the truth, this is the greatest faith I have found, even in Israel.” Believing, having faith and trusting in God helps to reassure us that we have faith in God. “Since we have been made right with God by our faith, we have peace with God. This happened through our Lord Jesus Christ, who through our faith has brought us into that blessing of God’s grace that we now enjoy.” Romans 5.1-2 Why Do Christians and Non Christians Need Help From God?

The Lord does forgive us and understands that we are not perfect and that we do make mistakes. In this world, there are many forces that may put us in a direction or path that may not be where God is leading us to go. You may decide at a particular moment in time, that you know what is best for you instead of letting God take you in the right direction and you become burdened and troubled with problems that you did not expect or anticipate, and you may feel that you have nowhere or no one to turn to. You may think that you cannot turn to the Lord for help because you turned your back on him and he will not forgive you. That would be a mistake because God can and will forgive you. He loves you and wants you to talk to him and ask him to forgive your sins and talk about what you are going through. The Lord is always there for us no matter when we need him. “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” Ephesians 1.7 It is so amazing how our Lord loves us so much that he is willing to forgive us no matter what we have done and no matter who we are. All we have to do is ask God to forgive us and he will do this for us. It does not matter if we think we do not deserve his forgiveness. The Lord will give us forgiveness through his love, grace and mercy for us. In Isaiah 55.7, “Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.” Forgiving others is also important for us to do and is a significant part of the Lord forgiving us for our sins. Not holding animosity, anger or grudges against another person is part of forgiving them and assists us in being able to heal from being wronged by others. The Lord says in Matthew 6. 14-15, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” So, you see the Lord will forgive you for your sins and you can always go to him and ask him for forgiveness. You have an open invitation anytime to speak with God because he is always available at anytime for us whenever we need him. In Joshua 1.9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Why Do Christians & Non Christians Need Help From God?
