Picture this: You’re at a family gathering, surrounded by laughter, love, and the tantalizing aroma of your grandma’s famous apple pie. As you eagerly anticipate dessert, your uncle bursts into the room, holding a beautifully wrapped present. “Surprise!” he exclaims, as he hands you the gift. With bated breath, you unwrap it to reveal… a dusty old encyclopedia from the 1980s. Now, before you start wondering if your uncle took a wrong turn in the attic, let me assure you—this isn’t just any encyclopedia. It’s a metaphor for something far more profound and life-changing: the New Covenant. For ages, man sought a way to reconnect to God after the fall in the Garden of Eden. Recall that man flaunted the commandment of God not to eat the forbidden fruit. Consequently, he became naked, and fearful and ultimately lost his connection with God. He was lost. For the first time, God asked a very unusual question, “Adam, where are you?” This question suggests that man was indeed lost. God was also looking for man. And right from that time, efforts were made to get the man back to God. Through the Scriptures, we see pockets of God’s manifestation through individuals. For example, Enoch walked with God, and Noah built the ark. Then, God began the process of redemption through a man called Abram (later called Abraham). This culminated in a nation called Israel. God raised a leader called Moses who led the people of Israel into making a covenant with God. In a loud and frightening celebration, God came down and presented the law to His people (Exodus 20). It was supposed to be the dawn of a new day. Unfortunately, this covenant had several defects. People couldn’t get close to God which was the ultimate desire of God. They were terrified by the thundering, the lightning and the smoke from the mountain. They asked Moses to meet God on their behalf and simply tell them what God is saying (Exodus 20:18-19). People couldn’t stop sinning. Several animals were killed daily to appease God. The sin-problem that separated man from God was not solved. The blood of bulls, doves and goats was not potent enough propitiate for the sin of man. God’s law was written on tables of stone. So, people easily forget the commandments of God. They couldn’t keep their hearts focused on God. Sometimes, they had to write these laws in several places so that they will not forget. God’s Spirit only rested on selected few. “For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second” (Hebrews 8:7). Therefore, there was a need for a better covenant; a new covenant that caters for all the deficiencies of the old. And after several years of waiting, the New Covenant was born when Jesus Christ was born. The New Covenant represents a new relationship between God and humanity, mediated through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 8:6). It is prophesied in the Old Testament (Jeremiah 31:31-34) and established by Jesus during his ministry on earth. In essence, the New Covenant is characterized by grace, forgiveness, and salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Unlike the Old Covenant, which was based on adherence to the Mosaic Law and rituals, the New Covenant is based on faith in Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection. In the New Covenant, there is; Forgiveness of Sins: Through Jesus’ death on the cross, believers receive forgiveness for their sins, reconciling them to God (Matthew 26:28, Hebrews 9:15). There is no longer a need to keep shedding the blood of innocent animals, Jesus Christ paid the price once and for all through His death on the cross. Personal Relationship with God: The New Covenant offers believers direct access to God through Jesus Christ, without the need for intermediaries (Hebrews 4:16, 10:19-22). Every child of God can now come boldly to the throne of grace. This is the significance of the tearing of the curtain of the sanctuary from top to bottom at the death of Jesus on the cross (Matthew 27:51). Access to the holy of holies is no longer the exclusive privilege of the priests, everyone can now come in. Empowerment by the Holy Spirit: Believers receive the Holy Spirit, who dwells within them, guiding, empowering, and transforming them to live according to God’s will (Acts 2:38, Romans 8:9-11). Unlike the Old Covenant where only a select few possess the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, everyone in the New Covenant is now eligible to the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Eternal Life: The New Covenant promises believers eternal life with God in heaven, secured through faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:16, Romans 6:23). Symbolized by the Sacrament of Communion and Water Baptism: During communion, Christians partake in the bread and wine, representing the body and blood of Jesus Christ, in remembrance of his sacrifice and the establishment of the New Covenant. The water baptism also symbolizes his death and resurrection. When a believer is immersed in water, he or she identifies with His death and His resurrection when the person is lifted out of the water into a new life. Overall, the New Covenant represents God’s ultimate expression of love and redemption for humanity, offering hope and salvation to all who believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. With the New Covenant, man has no reason to blame the first Adam for his sins anymore because the second Adam has been sent. “But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many” (Romans 5:15). Jesus Christ has eliminated sin and its consequences. We can now come boldly to the throne of grace. We can now serve God without fear all the days of our lives. We can now claim everything we lost in the Garden of Eden. We can live the same life Jesus lived while He was on the earth. Hallelujah!

The world today is plagued with a wide range of crises. From natural disasters, terrorism, war, diseases and bad governance, there is an increasing threat to the modicum of hope in the hearts of people. Some of the symptoms of hopelessness include discouragement, depression and suicide. According to the world Health Organization, about 280 million people suffer from depression globally and since depression may sometimes lead to suicide, about 700,000 people are estimated to die from suicide annually. But Jesus gives hope despite all the crises around the world. While Jesus was physically on earth, the Bible records several cases of people who were in hopeless situations but whose hope was renewed when Jesus showed up. Two notable cases of how Jesus restored the hope of people are: The resurrection of the son of the widow of Nain (Luke 7:11-17). The young man was already being carried out of the city to be buried when Jesus met them and asked them to stop. Jesus restored their lost hope when the man was raised back to life. The woman with twelve years flow of blood (Luke 8:43-48). She had spent all her livelihood trying to find a solution to the constant flow of blood. All hope was lost until she touched Jesus and the flow was permanently stopped. There are several other cases in the Bible where Jesus restored the lost hope of people. Though He is no longer in the world physically, He still gives hope to people through the Holy Spirit who is now actively working on earth in the lives of those who believe in Him. How then does He give hope today? Through the forgiveness of sin and offer of salvation. The Bible describes those who have not found salvation through Jesus Christ as “having no hope and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12). In other words, our hope is restored when we receive the gift of salvation and we can now “boast in the hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:2). Jesus gives hope because of the message of salvation and new life that He brings. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus offers the opportunity for forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God, which can bring hope to those who are struggling or feeling lost. Through His Word and Teachings in the Bible. When God’s word comes to us while we read the Bible or through the voice of the Holy Spirit, it has the power to give us hope. The Psalmist told God in Psalm 119:49, “Remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope.” In other words, God’s word can become an anchor to the soul in hopeless situations. The teachings of Jesus, such as the importance of love, compassion, and serving others, can bring hope and inspiration to those who follow him. Romans 15:4 says, “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” This is why God’s word must become a daily addiction of every child of God. Through miracles, signs, wonders, angelic interventions and divine provisions. Our hope and confidence in God are restored when we experience God’s miraculous interventions. The hope of Mary and Martha was lost on Lazarus. When Jesus eventually arrived, they told Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:20,32). But hope was restored after Lazarus was bought back to life. Through the promise of eternal life. Life can be tiring considering the different challenges and trials that people face. This is why the promise of eternal life in heaven with God can be a source of hope and comfort for believers. 1 Corinthians 15:19 says, “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.” Above all, we must ensure that we remain in Christ as Christ also remains in us because Christ in us is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

Paul gave Timothy this advice to help him: “I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I continually remember you in my prayers,” 2 Timothy 1:3. Being thankful for the people the Lord places in our lives and continuing to bring them up in prayer to Him are the two things that this verse reminds me of. When we pray for someone else, we give the Lord complete control over how the prayer is answered and the outcome. In all your ways, submit to the Lord, and He will make your paths straight: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5-6 In John 14:13–14, Jesus instructed us to pray in His name. When you act “in the name of” another person, you are carrying out his instructions. Therefore, a key component of prayer is having a solid understanding of God. We can now see the significance of praying for others. It’s not about getting everything we want or always keeping other people happy, healthy, and problem-free. Our relationship with our Savior can be deepened and strengthened through prayer, which also binds believers together. Because effective prayer is based on an understanding of God’s will, it will draw us closer to Him and benefit those we are praying for 1 John 5:14. As we get to know them better and concentrate on their needs, it will also help us get along with other people. Everything in our fractured world encourages selfishness and despair. Sin robs us of joy, damages our bodies, sabotages our plans, kills our dreams, weakens our resolve, and distorts our perspective. Persecution John 15:20; 2 Timothy 3:12, suffering 1 Peter 4:12, and various kinds of trials are all promised to us James 1:2-3. People will feel unloved, unimportant, useless, and forgotten when encouragement is missing from a church’s life. God calls us to encourage one another every day until His Son returns because He knows His people need grace-filled reminders. But as long as it’s called “Today,” encourage one another every day to prevent anyone from becoming hardened by sin’s deceit, 3:13 in Hebrews. It is crucial to pray for others because doing so satisfies a New Testament mandate. We must offer prayers for everyone 1 Timothy 2:1. We are to offer prayers for those in power 1 Timothy 2:2. We must offer prayers for the lost 1 Timothy 2:3-4. We’re supposed to pray for other Christians Ephesians 6:18. Paul instructs us to pray for gospel ministers in Ephesians 6:19–20. For the persecuted church, we are to offer prayers Hebrews 13:3. By praying for others, we shift our attention from our own needs to those of those around us. By helping one another, we “will fulfil the law of Christ” Galatians 6:2. As Paul stated in his letter, “I am sending him to you for the express purpose that you may know about our circumstances and that he may encourage your hearts,” encouragement is given with the intention of lifting someone’s heart toward the Lord, Colossians 4:8. It identifies instances of grace in another person’s life to make them aware of how God is working through them. It reminds us of God’s promises, which reassures us that He has power over everything we face. James 5:16 advises confession and prayer for others as a means of healing. According to James, “a righteous person’s prayer is powerful and effective.” According to Romans 3:21–22, the word “righteous” in the Bible refers to people who have faith and are justified by Jesus. Most of the time, our prayers for other people go something like this: Lord, give my friend a job, a running car, good health, and safety. We might pray for someone’s marriage or other relationships if we know them well enough. Nothing is wrong with praying for these things; in fact, the Bible exhorts us to do so in order to allay our worries Philippians 4:6. It is appropriate to pray for wellbeing and favorable outcomes 3 John 1:2. The majority of the prayers mentioned in the Bible, though, are of a different kind. When Jesus prayed for others, He prayed for their sanctification John 17:11, their unity John 17:32, their faith Luke 22:32, and protection from temptation in their lives Luke 22:40, John 17:17. Paul prayed that the brothers would stay on the right path 2 Corinthians 13:7, that the lost would be saved Romans 10:1, and those believers would be strengthened by the Spirit, rooted and grounded in love, able to understand God’s love, and filled with the fullness of God Ephesians 3:14–19. All of these are requests for spiritual blessings that are certain to be granted through Christ because they are made “in Jesus’ name” and in accordance with the Father’s will 2 Corinthians 1:20. Let them know that you are praying for them and after we have prayed for our friend, family and others before the Father, also ask if you can join them in prayer. Give them any advice the Spirit gives you, if any. My spirit is uplifted when someone says they pray for me because I know they care about me and want the best for me, which is exactly what the Lord wants for me. Start praying for others right away if you haven’t already to strengthen the body of Christ. “And this is my prayer: that your love may increase in wisdom and depth of understanding, that you may know what is best, that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, that you may be overflowing with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God” Philippians 1:9-11.

The letter of Paul to the Ephesians church spoke copiously on the need to live in unity with one another, especially as God’s children. The letter made it clear, right from the beginning, that God wants unity. His purpose is “to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ” Ephesians 1:10. Different forms of human relationships that function only through unity were listed and discussed in Ephesians. For example; Husband –Wife Relationship Ephesians 5:22-33 Parent-Children Relationship Ephesians 6:1-4 Master-Servant Relationship Ephesians 6:5-9 Church Leader-Laity Relationship Ephesians 6:21-22 All these relationships can only function on the wings of unity. We are commanded to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” Ephesians 4:3. In other words, we must intentionally work at ensuring that we remain united despite our differences. How then does God want us to be united with each other? In the spirit of respect: Without respect for one another, it is impossible to remain united in any relationship. Ephesians 5:21 says, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” This is another way of saying, “Respect one another.” Respect is reciprocal; we have to give respect to others irrespective of their age, status or color and not just receive from them. In the spirit of brotherhood. For example, the master is commanded not to threaten the slave or servant but treat him as a fellow servant since the Lord is the master of both of them Ephesians 6:9. This can only happen when the master views the slave as a fellow brother in Christ and not just a servant under him. The unity will be further strengthened when the servant doesn’t feel intimated or insure in the presence of his master. In the spirit of reference to God: Ephesians posited that all relationship will function in unity when individuals involved are subject to God. The reason for disunity often stems from the fact that we don’t give due reference to God. You can’t possibly put up a fight with your spouse knowing very well that you can’t stand before Him with grudges in your heart against someone else. When wives see the Lord as the head of their husbands, they will submit Ephesians 5:22-24. Husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved the church Ephesians 5:25-32. Servants are not serving their masters but the Lord while masters also remember the Master when relating with their slaves Ephesians 6:5-9. In the spirit of equality: Jesus Christ “has made the two groups (Jews and Gentiles) one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility… his purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of two, thus making peace” Ephesians 2:14-15. This is to create unity and equality; that no race, color or status is superior to the other. In Christ, there is just one humanity. There is no black or white, Latino, Asian, Caucasian or any other ethnic group; just one new humanity. The book of Ephesians also made it clear that God also wants us to be united with one another in the spirit of oneness Ephesians 4:4-6, forgiveness Ephesians 4:32, love Ephesians 5:2 and fairness Ephesians 6:9. Even if the world cannot live up to this standard, the church must work hard “until we all reach unity in the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:13

When someone is referred to as the father of something, it implies that the fellow is an important figure in the origin and early history of that thing. In other words, it would be impossible to talk about the topic without the mention of that person. Such is Abraham when it comes to faith. Hebrews 11 chronicled a list of men and women who did exploits through faith. The account reveals that before Abraham, men like Abel, Enoch, and Noah had exercised faith. Abel offered a better sacrifice through faith, Enoch walked with God while Noah built an ark through the same faith. However, none of these seems to exemplify faith in relatable, practical and real life experiences like Abraham. Abraham’s faith was tested in things that we can easily identify. We can quickly make reference to Abraham’s faith today after thousands of years because some of us now go through what Abraham went through. Abraham seems to be the pioneer of practical relatable faith especially for those of us who are New Testament believers. Here are some of the ways Abraham pioneered and demonstrated faith; In responding to the call of God. In Genesis 12:1, we read, “Now the Lord had said to Abram: ‘Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you”. It is very easy to travel to a named place even if you have never been there before. All you need is to ask for direction. But to pack your bags and begin a journey “to a land that I will show you” is strange. Yet “Abram departed as the Lord has spoken to him” Genesis 12:4. “He went out, not knowing where he was going” Hebrews 11:8. This requires a high level of faith. In living in a strange land. Staying among people he didn’t know also was an act of faith. No matter how bad, there is something about home that we cannot find somewhere else. Hebrews 11:9 says, “By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” In waiting for the birth of Isaac. This seems to be the crux of Abraham’s expression of faith. For about 25 years, Abraham and Sarah waited trusting God for the promised child. Romans 4:19-21 says, “And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform”. In the sacrifice of Isaac. This is perhaps the hardest decision Abraham had to make in his journey of faith. It was crazy to even think God would ask him to sacrifice the child he had waited for many years. But because Abraham knew God, he obeyed. The Bible told us what his mind set was when he set out to sacrifice his only begotten son. He concluded “that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead” Hebrews 11:19. These are reasons why Abraham is often referred to as the father of faith and it is why anyone in the journey of faith can look up to his example and be inspired to trust God. “Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations) in the presence of Him whom he believed God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did.” Romans 4:16-17. Why Do Christians and Non Christians Need Help From God? The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim.
One of the most mind-boggling questions of Christianity is this: if God is in control of everything, do we really have free will? It’s such a difficult question, in fact, that theologians have divided themselves into two camps. Calvinists, who believe that only the elect are “predestined” for salvation, and Arminians, who believe that we choose whether or not to accept Christ. While there is a lot to be said about both sides, the most simple answer to this question is yes. We can all agree that we are not robots, forced to serve God mindlessly. After all, God created us to love and enjoy Him, and in order for that to happen, choice must be involved. We can either choose Him or sin – that is free will. The very first instance of free will happens in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 2:16-17: “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’” God is giving Adam and Eve a choice, here. They can obey God’s command and continue to live in perfect harmony with Him. Or they can disobey and face the consequences. Now, God already knows what the outcome will be. God, by nature, is all-knowing and yet, He gives them the choice anyway. How can that be? Although God certainly knew which option they would pick, he did not force them to choose one way or another. Many skeptics will ask, “If God is perfect and good, then why did He create the possibility for evil?” In God’s perfect plan, His people love Him out of the desire of their own hearts, not out of compulsion. Compulsion, after all, is the opposite of love. In order for man to choose God, there had to be another option, and now, because of Adam and Eve’s choice, we are all now bent toward the option of sin. Just like Adam and Eve, we still have free will today, but by the grace of God, we have an option that they didn’t – faith in Jesus Christ. Because of His work on the cross, our wrong choices don’t have to separate us from God forever. He washes away our mistakes and gives us His spirit to guide us in the right way. In Revelation 3:20, Jesus Himself says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” Here, Christ makes it clear that though He offers salvation freely to everyone, it is up to us to accept that invitation, and the more we grow to love Him, the easier it will be to serve Him – not out of slavery, but out of freedom. It is because of free will that we can learn to love God’s will. Why Do Christians and Non Christians Need Help From God?

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5.7 Faith is something that we, as Christians, all strive for. It is faith that first leads us to repent and believe in Christ. It is faith that encourages us to trust Him during all the trials of life and it is faith that keeps us moving toward the ultimate goal of heaven. Faith does not come naturally to us, nor can we earn it on our own. It’s something that God gives us as we seek to follow Him. So, what are some of the ways that God gives us faith, each and every day? Romans 10.17 says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” God’s Word is full of promises, promises toward us, promises towards people of the past, and promises of things to come. We can look back on God’s faithfulness to His people; how He rescued Noah from the flood, how He brought the Israelites out of slavery, how He delivered Daniel from the lion’s den, and so much more. When we bear witness to God’s awesome power in the past, we can be filled with confidence that He can deliver in the same way today because God never changes. Another way that God gives us faith is somewhat surprising, He gives us faith through our trials. James 1.3 “For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” The very definition of faith is belief in that which is unseen. In order for God to build our faith, we must first go through a period of doubting and maybe even anxiety. It’s only human to be anxious when hardships come our way, but when we learn to give all control to God and to trust Him, He will increase our faith so that the next time, we hold onto our anxieties a little less tightly. Finally, it’s important to remember that it’s not about the size of our faith, but about the strength. Consider Luke 17.5-6: “The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ and the Lord said, ‘If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you.’” We may not have all the answers. We may not be able to see the future or make decisions without fear of the outcome, but if, deep inside, we believe with all of our hearts in the power of a sovereign God, we can do anything. Jesus has assured us that though trouble will come, He gives us all that we need to surpass it. Therefore, we should constantly be asking God to grant us more faith, stronger faith, so that we can live for Him regardless of what might stand in our way. He has given us so many reasons to trust Him, and He will give us even more if only we ask. Why Do Christians and Non Christians Need Help From God?
