What Is Prayer? God is Spirit and only worshipped in spirit and in truth John 4:24, Although man has flesh inside him, there is a spirit that aids him to worship God. Therefore, prayer is the means by which God has given man to fellowship and communicate with Him. When we pray, we are simply acknowledging the presence of God’s power. It is simply surrendering your will and power and allowing the will of God to prevail in your life. When we pray, we either give thanks, offer our supplications or petitions to God, engage in spiritual warfare, or intercede for someone else. We are going to learn how we can use prayer to intercede for someone else. Jesus Christ said to His disciples that people will know that they are His disciples when they love one another. A new commandment “I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this, all will know that you are My disciples if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35 Loving one another involves praying for each other as you wish them well. This is regardless of whether they are our friends or enemies, we should love them equally and pray for them. Look at what Jesus taught his disciples. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. Mathew 5:43-45. Therefore, we can see that prayer can be used as a tool to help someone else who is in bondage or undergoing challenges in life. We do this because Jesus Christ has set for us a good example to emulate. During His earthly ministry, Christ could always spend time alone or with some of his disciples praying. I believe He wasn’t only praying for His needs alone but to the people, he was going to minister to. The gospel written by John records a whole chapter that is chapter 17 where we see Jesus Christ praying for not only His disciples but also even those who had not yet received or believed in Him. “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. John 17:20-21. Even after Christ accomplishing the work that His Father had sent Him to do here on earth, He didn’t stop praying for us. Apostle Paul records in his letter to the Romans that; “Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:34 How does it feel to hear that Jesus Christ who is the Son of God that is seated at the right hand of the Father is constantly praying for us? This only should humble us and make us obey Him and His word that He spoke that we should love one another and pray for each other. But sometimes you may find that our bodies are very weak to an extent that even we lack the strength to pray for ourselves let alone praying for someone else. A similar incident was witnessed in the garden of Gethsemane a time that Jesus Christ was in great agony and needed His disciples who He had walked with to pray at least one hour for Him. But the moment he could come back He could find His disciples sound asleep. Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mathew 26:40-41 The weakness in praying for ourselves comes because we are still in this flesh. Our spirit may be willing for us to pray but the weakness of our flesh tends to win the battle and this is the reason that Jesus Christ spoke to His disciples and promised them a Helper who was to come when He would have gone and left them alone to carry out His ministry. “And I will pray to the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17. We see this promise coming to fulfillment in the book of Acts during the day of Pentecost as the Spirit of God is poured out on all flesh. Now the Spirit of God is our Helper to help us in our weakness just as Apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Rome like this; “Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26 This means that when we acknowledge the power of the Holy Spirit and decide to walk according to Him, we can never fulfill the evil desires of the flesh Galatians 5:16. Walking by the guidance of the Holy Spirit gives us strength and makes us strong in faith. The scripture records that “we then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbour for his good, leading to edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, the reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” Romans 15:1-3 There are a lot of people suffering in sin and bondage and being held captive by the powers of darkness. These people are waiting for us who are strong to carry their burdens. The good news is that God doesn’t expect us to use our power or strength. He has already equipped us with the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, the same power that was used to raise Christ from the dead dwells in us. “But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” Romans 8:11 Look at the responsibility that Jesus Christ gave us, this is when He spoke to Peter, “and I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:19 Brethren, we have prayer as the greatest weapon that we have been given by God to help people around us. We have what it takes to set free those in bondage in this kingdom of heaven here on earth. We shouldn’t allow the devil to torment mankind while we have been given the power to pull him down. We should shift our focus from fighting each other and wage spiritual warfare. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. Apostle James gives us these last instructions; “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. and the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven” James 5:13-15

One of the problems of humanity is disunity. Since the fall of man at Eden, it has become increasingly difficult for humans to attain peaceful coexistence. Cain could not agree with Abel, his brother and he eventually killed him and ever since, the human race has continued to become fragmented along religious and racial lines, political and social affiliations including differing values and belief systems. Despite technological innovations and the level of enlightenment and education, vices like racism, modern-day slavery and civil wars are still a common phenomenon in our world. Unfortunately, the church which is supposed to be a pillar of light sending hope to a failed world is also affected by this scourge of disunity. Perhaps, this is why Jesus made the prayer for the unity of the church a crucial highlight of his last prayers while on earth. In John 17:11, He prayed, “…that they may be one as we are one.” Jesus also charged His disciples to stay united, John 13:34-35; a reflection of the importance He placed on unity among believers. Also, we have the ministry of reconciliation; helping two parties who cannot agree or offended to settle or resolve their differences, 2 Corinthians 5:18. If unity is of such utmost importance, how can we try to unite people as Christians? The following principles will help us live in unity with others while we also try to unite people as Christians. The quality of the relationship we have with people is a reflection of the quality of the relationship we have with God: To unite people as Christians, we must understand that there is no better way to evaluate the quality of our relationship with God more than our relationship with fellow men. We cannot claim to be united with God and live in disunity with people. No one who is consistently having contact with God will live in disunity with men and women because any hitch in our relationship with men and women will hinder our relationship with God. This is why we are commanded to quickly reconcile with anyone who has a quarrel or an issue with us so that our prayers will not be hindered (Matthew 5:23-24). 1 John 4:20 says, “If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” Invariably, people who can live conveniently and consistently in disunity with fellow men and women are far from God; they are out of touch with God. Unity is the Password to God’s Blessing: Psalm 133 reiterates why believers must stay united. The later part of verse 3 summarizes why unity is indispensable. It says, “…for there the Lord commanded the blessing even life forevermore.” Where does God command the blessing even life forevermore? Verse 1 tells us that it is that place where brethren dwell together in unity. This shows the reason we do not experience God’s blessing when we meet or gather as believers. God is limited and unable to move in and bless His people when there are taints of disunity in the community. The disciples didn’t receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit at the upper room necessarily because they were praying or fasting but because “they were all with one accord in one place,“ Acts 2:1. The unity within them gave the Holy Spirit an unhindered entrance into their midst. If it has become increasingly difficult for us to experience God’s blessing as a community of faith, perhaps we should give attention to our relationship with one another. Practice Forgiveness: As long as we are in this world, people will offend us. People that we trust so much will disappoint us and let us down. We must learn to forgive them. If we have to hold everybody’s offence against them, then we will soon realize that we have no one around us with whom we can relate. There will be gross resentment and disunity. God’s word is clear about what we must do when people offend us. We to forgive from the heart, a prerequisite for receiving our forgiveness from God, Matthew 6:14-15. Appreciate and celebrate other People’s Differences: There is a difference between unity and uniformity. Uniformity is demanding that every other person become like us; unity is the ability to agree despite our differences. God has not called us to unity, not uniformity. Our focus on uniformity is sometimes the motivation for starting a new movement, organization or denomination. We must learn to accommodate others despite our differences. Galatians 3:28 says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Relationships and how we manage them are critical to our success in life and our eternity with God. We must do everything within our reach to stay united as Christians. Others may be mean or have issues with us but “if possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone,” Romans 12:18. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

We are in a time when so many are losing their faith in God. People are giving up on God. Some people who go to church have backslidden secretly. We are living in a time where there are many false allegations and untruths that are not scripturally based on the Word that God has given to us from His Bible. God looks for a remnant, people through whom He will reveal to the world that He is still God irrespective of the challenges. He needs people who will still put their trust and faith in Him in a time like this. So, how are others helped when I put my faith in God? How can my faith positively impact others? Hebrews 6:11-12 says, “And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” Scripture also defines faith as “knowing what lies ahead for you” even though you haven’t seen it physically. It says if you have this kind of faith, “you won’t become bored with being a Christian nor become spiritually dull and indifferent.” The Christian life is boring without faith. One soon becomes spiritually dull and indifferent. The fervor and drive is lost without that inner knowing that something great lies ahead of us. This is why so many are losing their faith. They have come to a point where they can no longer see a future with God. However, this scripture also shows us one way our faith can be helped or reignited. It says, we can “follow the example of those who receive all that God has promised them because of their strong faith and patience.” In other words, when we see someone who went through what we are going through, we become inspired to go through it. To bring this point home, the writer of Hebrews began to give us examples that we can relate with. Hebrews 6:13-15 says, “For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.” God gave Abraham a son, Isaac as He had promised. This is the biggest way your faith in God helps others. You become God’s instance to your generation. You become the go-to person when God needs to encourage or inspire another person. You become an inspiration, the person from whom others draw comfort in trials. Think of Joseph and Job. Why do we read stories of Esther, Hannah, Ruth and a host of others? It is simply because they are God’s prototype of what it means to have faith. Your faith in God gives you a ministry to others; a ministry you will never have if you have never put your trust in God. Our faith in God gives us the opportunity to reach out to people; they are compelled to ask and know about your God. You become the reference point before God and man. This is why you should never be part of those “who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.” Hebrews 10:39 How Do The Desires of Daily Living Take Control of Our Heart From God? Why Do Christians and Non Christians Need Help From God?

It is the goal of every believer in God to please Him. Unbelievers also look for His favour. No one wants to be at loggerhead with God because a lot of benefits are attached to pleasing God. Proverbs 16:7 says, “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” Isaac exemplified this. God made his enemies to be at peace with Him. Abimelech and his people had chased him out of their land but they came back and made a treaty with him. When they came back to Isaac, they confessed, “We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you. So we said, Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you.” Genesis 26:28. Enoch remains one of the few human beings that was spared from death because he pleased God Hebrews 11:5. Moreover, a lot of dangers are attached to displacing God. Hebrews 10:31 says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Each time the Israelites did something that displeases God, they always died in the thousands. God’s displeasure towards a man brings a lot of evil. This is why it is important to know how one can please God. How then can I please God? Have Faith In God “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” Hebrews 11:6. This is the first step towards pleasing God; putting our faith in Him. This faith first talks about believing that He is revealed in the human form in the person of Jesus to save us from our sins. He died and rose again so that we may have eternal life. This faith also talks of that daily, confident rest in His love and faithfulness. It is believing His word in the face of contrary conditions. This was how the saints pleased Him. Abraham pleased Him because he moved at God’s commandment even when he didn’t know where he was going. Eschew Evil This implies a complete abstinence from sin and anything that displeases God. God hates sin. He is so holy, He cannot behold iniquity. When we sin, He is grieved. We cannot possibly please Him when we keep doing things that grieves Him. John 9:31 says, “Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.” Psalm 24:3-5 also says, “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.” God has a special attraction to those who cleanse themselves from sin and all kinds of evil. We must get rid of every form of sin in our lives if we want to please Him. Become God’s Friend How do we become God’s intimate friend? We become His friend by spending more time with Him than what an average Christian will do. We get to know, love and trust people that we spend more time with. It is the same with God. The more the time spent with Him, the closer we get to Him. Moses was God’s friend because he spent a lot of time with Him. Exodus 33:11 tells us that “the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” This is why when Mariam and others spoke against Moses, the Lord defended him. Moses had pleased the Lord. He was His friend. “If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings; and he sees the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?” Numbers 12:6-8. If you want to please God, begin to spend more time with Him. Cut down on the time spent with the things of the world and invest it into developing your relationship with God. We can please Him. How Do The Desires of Daily Living Take Control of Our Heart From God? Why Do Christians and Non Christians Need Help From God?

Guest Contributor Pastor Dalarian’s Message October 3, 2018 Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Growing in Grace as a Christian we need to grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I was meditating on the word of God, in Josh 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” The spirit of the Lord is saying to me I see, I hear, and I know because I’m God. I see everything that they are doing in the world. There is no love in world, I see them with my eyes and they think they are getting away with their evil ways. I hear what they are saying about each other because you are hurting yourself, you need my love but, you want ask for it. I know what is in your heart, because I am God. 2 Chronicles 7: 14 “If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land.” Many Christians are still in the test-driving Grace as though you are test driving a new car. You know that you don’t want the car and you’re just thinking that you want it, but, God knows the heart because he is the all-knowing God. We need to meditate more which helps you grow in grace. It opens the door of your maid to the Holy Spirit. Paul spoke about his maid and how he was delivered from the old man (The bold way of thinking the law). That kept him living in his past but now he has been set free by the word of God. In Josh 1:8 we see how the Law affirms the key importance of God’s revelation. Studying and learning the word along with meditation is a very important part of one’s life, that the word is fully obeyed. If we meditate on the word we will see our growth in wisdom and knowledge. In Verse 8, you can see how you will prosper and have success because the Holy Spirit is at work in the believer’s life by the revelation and our understanding in God. 2 Peter 3:18 “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever.” The Holy Spirit is the agent at work, it’s the helper and the comforter that keeps the believer free from sin. That’s why it is important to meditate on the word of God. It helps keep you Holy. Amen.

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3 From the very beginning, God has made it clear that He alone is to be worshipped. When we think of idols, we may be tempted to think of the metal or wooden statues of ancient times. We may even think of all the false gods worshipped in other religions around the world today, but what many Christians fail to realize is that idols aren’t always physical, tangible objects, an idol is anything that we worship instead of God. Some common idols of our modern culture include money, relationships, and prestige. So how do these idols keep us from God? First, we have to understand the reason why God forbids idolatry and the reason is this: He is the only one who is worthy of our praise. He formed the universe and everything in it, including all of humanity. While we are certainly meant to enjoy all the blessings He has given us, we must be careful not to make these things the center of our devotion. We can get so caught up in the goodness of life that we forget the source of all things good – Jesus. Everything in creation is meant to point us to His majesty, His sovereignty, and His worthiness. It is meant to help us see God’s grace and follow His plan for our lives. To treat creation as most important a slap in the face to the Creator Himself. If we’re not careful, we can even make idols out of seemingly innocent things, like our families, loved ones, or personal passions. Of course, it’s good to spend time with our families and pursue our interests, but when we put those things before God, we are severely missing the point. Idolatry is fundamentally about where our hearts are. It involves choosing something other than God to take His place and priority in our lives. In Romans 1:21, the Apostle Paul says of the idolaters: “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were they thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” As believers, we know who God is. We know what He has done for us, and so we should never give anyone – or anything – else the honor He is due. Finally, idolatry is not only offensive to God, but also destructive to ourselves. Jonah 2:8 says, “They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.” When we put our faith in Christ, we receive steadfast love and hope that can’t be found anywhere else. He alone can give us the eternal life and fulfillment that we were created for. Worshipping other things will only leave us empty. Wealth, power, and pleasure will never placate us. That’s why God is urging us to turn from these vain pursuits, to tear down these idols, and to seek Him first. For only then will we be truly satisfied.
One of the biggest mistakes that we can make as Christians is having an incorrect attitude toward prayer. Many believers, intentionally or not, have a skewed perception of prayer; they see it and approach it as something that it is not. For instance, prayer is not a slot machine that we can use to get whatever we want. Prayer is also not a tool to make us look holier in the eyes of our peers. Prayer is, however, essential. and it can help us in a variety of ways as we follow Christ in our everyday lives. As scripture states in Colossians 4.2 “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” First, prayer keeps our hearts in line with the will of God. If we didn’t follow His will, we would be chasing after every sinful desire that enters our minds. But how can we know what God wants for us if we never communicate with Him? Sometimes, the answers we seek are closer than we think. All we have to do is ask. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” We may not always get the response we want, but we will always get the truth, which is infinitely better. Prayer also allows us to show that we are trusting completely and unconditionally in God. It is a sign of obedience and giving up control. It expresses our faith that though we are weak, God is greater than anything we face. Often, when we try to take charge of situations we may not like, we only end up hurting ourselves and others. While we should always seek wisdom in decision-making and this is another application of prayer, there comes a point where we must leave everything in God’s hands. Prayer reminds us that He is sovereign, no matter what is going on in our lives. Ephesians 6.18 says “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Finally, prayer recenters our focus to God. Prayer is a time of pausing in the midst of all the chaos and simply reflecting on our Creator. This is why it is important to pray not just in the most dire situations, but constantly and regularly. What we have to understand is that prayer is not how we change God. Prayer is how God changes us. He created it as a way for us to grow closer to Him and learn to rely on Him as we live out His plan. Prayer is not merely symbolic, it is effective, and God often responds in mighty ways. James 5:16 says, “Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Prayer not only helps us, but also helps us to better serve God and others. Understanding this, let us never underestimate the impact that one simple prayer can have on the world around us. Why Do Christians & Non Christians Need Help From God?

A covenant is an agreement between two parties. In this context, it is God having a covenant with His people. To have a New Covenant means that there was an Old Covenant which may have been good yet has lived out it’s time and allowed space for the new one to come to effect. God in His wisdom had set up a Covenant with His children in the Old Testament times called the Mosaic Covenant or the Old Covenant. God’s law was written down for everyone to study and keep. It also provided a sacrificial system where the blood of animals would cover up sins so that people could remain in fellowship with God. This covenant was good enough to express God’s grace, mercy, longsuffering and love to the people. A major characteristic of this covenant was that God worked a lot through prophets and mediation for people through high priests. The New Covenant The New Covenant was prophesied by Jeremiah in the Bible in Jeremiah NIV verse 31:31 ” The days are coming,” declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.” In verse 33 of Jeremiah, this scripture says, “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord, I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” It therefore meant that the law of duty was no longer to be written on tables of stone but it was to be written on each and everyone’s heart. An instance recorded in Isaiah 1:11 inform us that the LORD had no pleasure in the act of sacrificing animals to remain in good standing with Him. When we fast forward to the New Testament times, in Luke 22:19 – 20 we hear Jesus informing His disciples about His death on the cross and that His blood was to be an integral part of the New Covenant. It is believed that at this time Jesus inaugurated the New Covenant. The New Covenant comes with liberation to the people that they no longer have to read the ‘dos and don’ts of the Mosaic law but to have it written in their hearts and have power within to reference and do the will of God. The promise of this internal treasure is written in Hebrews 8:10 where the Bible says, “I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” As opposed to recalling the laws from memory, children of the New Covenant will have to answer to the call to obedience to God’s laws not only from their minds but also from their hearts. The tradition of high priest offering animal sacrifices for people’s sins fell off. Hebrews 10:4 says, “It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” The blood of Jesus offers a complete solution to the cleansing of sin 1 John 1:7. The blood of Jesus opened up the gate to the Most Holy Place for everyone to access it at will Hebrews 10:19. The New covenant also comes with the benefit of having a personal relationship with God. In Hebrews 10:19-25, God declares that He shall be the God of His people and the people shall be His own. Therefore, God is no longer the God of everyone but God of each of His people. The New Covenant has opened up the grace of God to all men and women from every tribe, tongue and people from nations across the expanse of the globe. This allows Christians to live in unity of brotherhood as neighbors even when the physical distance is miles apart. No one has justifiable reasons to neglect this gift of God given freely for all to enjoy Hebrews 2:3. Why Do Christians & Non Christians Need Help From God?
