Since the fall at the Garden of Eden, man has been looking for a way to get back into the relationship he had with God. This is the essence of salvation. Because of sin, the relationship was broken and the image of God that we used to have was destroyed. We became unfit and unworthy to approach a holy God.  “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23. Hence, we need to be redeemed and restored to who we used to be.

Life is empty and boring and lifeless without God. There will always be a void; a vacuum and a lack of a sense of fulfilment when a man or woman has not found salvation in Christ Jesus. One may have all the money, fame and resources at his or her disposal but without a vital relationship with God and confident assurance of salvation, there will be gross insecurity in the soul of that man or woman.

The question then is; how can we obtain this salvation? How is it made available to us? How can we access it?

1. Through the Love of the Father. We can have salvation all because the Father loved us. This love was revealed almost immediately after the fall. It was revealed in His discipline of man, in ensuring that we did not eat the tree of life else we become irredeemable then in making animal skins to cover the nakedness of man. God would later release His only begotten to die for our sins. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” Obtaining salvation begins with an encounter with the Father’s unconditional love.

2. Through the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. It would not be enough if it was just the Father that loved us, Jesus also brought grace. He willingly decided to become man and die for our sins. This was grace at work. The Scripture says, “…grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” John 1:17. We became saved and justified by His grace Romans 3:24; Ephesians 2:8.

3. Through the Preaching of the Gospel. The good news of God’s provision for our salvation is the gospel and until a man or woman hears or learns about it, there is no hope of salvation. We can have salvation through the preaching of the gospel. Paul asked an important question in Romans 10:14, “And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” This is why he committed his life to the preaching of the gospel because people only have a chance at salvation when they hear it.

4. Through our Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Despite the love of the Father and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ made available to every man and woman, many are not saved even after they have heard the gospel because they have not put their faith in Christ Jesus. We must believe in our heart the finished work of Christ on the cross before we can be saved. “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness…” Romans 10:9-10.

5. Through the Confession of our Mouth. We must express our faith with our mouth. If we cannot confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, it might be that we don’t believe Him in our heart. Romans 10:9-10 says, “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.”

6. Through our Continuous Fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Salvation doesn’t end at the moment when we believe with our heart and make a public confession with our mouth, we must continue to fellowship daily with the Holy Spirit who was given to us at salvation in God’s word and prayer. The absence of this is why so many people put their faith in Christ but soon continue to live the way they used to live before they came to Christ. You will soon begin to feel as if you were never saved if you do not make time out daily to fellowship with the Holy Spirit. This is indispensable. You are a newborn who needs to be fed and nourished in order to grow.

Salvation is obtainable through the provision of God and the responsibility of men and women. There will not be salvation in the absence of any of the two. Fortunately, God has done His part. He has loved us and has expressed it in sending to us His only begotten son. Jesus died and rose again as a propitiation for our sins. No man or woman will be able to accuse God in eternity for losing his or her soul. The ball is in our court to willingly accept God’s provision for our salvation. “…Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” 2 Corinthians 6:2.
