Faith is an indispensable spiritual commodity that every Christian should have. Faith is the currency of the kingdom of God. It is the legal tender by which believers on earth transact with God in heaven.
Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
In other words, it takes faith to deal with God.
Also, our Christian experience is often a reflection of the quality and the quantity of our faith. The more faith we have, the more heavenly interventions, resources and provisions we can experience. Those who have and exercise their faith in God will often see God at work in their lives.
In Matthew 17, the disciples did all they could to cast out a demon but they couldn’t. Then, they asked Him in a private discussion, “Why could we not cast it out?” Matthew 17:19. “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your little faith, for truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20-17:21
We can also point to things and situations that we find very difficult to deal with. Like the disciples, we ask, “Why could we not do it?” Our answer might be similar to the response Jesus gave the disciples. It could be due to our unbelief. Nothing, Jesus said, will be impossible for you if you have faith.
This makes learning to have faith in God an integral part of our calling as Christians. Here are a few ways one can learn to have faith in God:
Give Yourself to Reading and Meditation in the Word. As you read and meditate on several stories of men and women who lived a life of faith in the Bible, your faith will begin to grow. You will be challenged and inspired also to live and walk in faith. Your faithlessness will be exposed and you will often find yourself crying to God like the father of the child in Mark 9:24, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
Listen to Messages on Faith. Messages of and on faith will also boost your faith. When you listen to anointed messages on faith, it is bound to accelerate your ability to live and walk by faith. You will see perspectives on faith that you couldn’t see by yourself during your own time of meditation in the word of God. This is why it is important to belong to a community of faith where God’s word is preached accurately. Remember, “So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ” Romans 10:17.
Listen to Testimonies of Faith. One of the ways you can learn to have faith is to maximize moments when people share testimonies of what God has done for them in church. It has a way of giving you the “If God can do it for him, He can do it me” effect especially when the testimony shared is similar to yours. Testimonies of the divine provision will boost your faith when you are in lack. Testimonies of healing will help you trust God for your healing when you are in sickness. To boost the faith in Mary that it was possible for her to conceive without knowing a man, Gabriel shared the testimony of Elizabeth with her. This helped the faith of Mary who eventually conceived and became the mother of Jesus.
Pray a Lot. Prayer impacts and helps our faith. When the apostles were threatened and told to stop preaching in the name of Jesus, it weakened their resolve but they went back and prayed. The Bible says, “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness” Acts 4:31. In prayer, you can give God your fears and let Him replace it with faith. In prayer, God has a chance to remind you of His words that can boost your confidence. All men of faith, with testimonies and exploits of faith, are men of prayer.
Take Steps of Faith. Faith will not work until you act on it. It doesn’t matter what you hear, what you do is what converts God’s word into reality. Act on the word of God as soon as it comes to you. Fear is the enemy of faith and it sets in when you delay in taking the steps of faith. You will lose the urgency and allow dissenting voices that dilute your faith to come in when you delay actions of faith. Everyone feels fear when it comes to taking actions of faith but it is taking immediate action despite fear that resolves it. One of the qualities of Abraham the father of faith is that He acts on God’s word almost immediately. He doesn’t delay! When he was asked to send the bondwoman, Hagar away, the Bible records, “So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away” Genesis 21:14. He didn’t delay. When he was asked to go and sacrifice his only begotten son just after he had sent Ishmael away, he didn’t delay. The Bible says, “So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him” Genesis 22:3.
There may be moments when it seems your act of faith didn’t work out as expected, it shouldn’t deter you from trusting God even more. A child learning how to walk doesn’t give up on walking simply because he fell. You must keep trusting Him until you know Him. You must have the confidence that everything is working together for your good.
