The word ‘trinity’ is not found anywhere in the Bible yet it defines the doctrine of the unity of God, The Holy Spirit and The Son Jesus Christ. The doctrine of The Trinity is one distinct belief for Christianity. This doctrine stipulates that Jesus Christ was truly God, and yet was a Person distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit is also a distinct divine Person.
The doctrine stipulates that there is only one God in three persons; The Father generates, the Holy Spirit proceeds and the Son is begotten. Their relationship to one another is that they are co-equal, co-eternal and each is supreme.
In His instruction to the disciples, Jesus commanded them to go baptize people in the three names that define the trinity; the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:16 – 20). Jesus Himself gave this dimension that would spiritually cover in total as a mandatory requirement to whoever gets to be baptized under this confession. Dr. Harold Wilmington makes a similar analogy to explain the doctrine of the trinity by explaining dimensions of a book. He said, I quote: “a book has length, width, and thickness. The length is not the book’s width, the width is not the book’s thickness. These three dimensions can be described separately, yet they are connected together. If you remove one dimension, you are no longer describing a book.”
Jesus did a lot of things that were supernatural that resembled qualities of being of God. This includes miracles of healing, turning water into wine, raising the dead, declaring forgiveness of sins, reading into people’s minds on their thoughts about Him, full understanding of the law of Moses, referencing scripture without reading, talking to the devils/demons with authority and understanding, and fearing no earthly authority above God’s commandments.
Jesus answered a question to unveil His equal level with God that was put forth to Him by the Pharisees. In the Pharisees’ human capacity, they had argued their point in John 8:57 NIV saying to Jesus, “you are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham!” To their amazement, Jesus did not withdraw His claim but responded to them by saying John 8:58 ” Very truly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am!” They clearly understood what Jesus was saying and they did not like it because it undoubtedly meant that Jesus equaled Himself to God, seeing that their words could not win the battle, according to verse John 8:59 “At this, they picked up stones to stone Him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.” Jesus again proved that He was supernatural by hiding Himself and slipping away from their presence.
The doctrine of the Trinity is a mystery that is very difficult to understand and explain as God is infinitely complex and greater than the human capacity to comprehend His nature. This in fact should not bother us at all because according to Deuteronomy 29:29 NIV “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law“. It should be satisfying to know that God is not human and therefore He cannot be defined as a human or anything natural.
