“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12
We serve a God who is, in many ways, mysterious to us. His ways are far above our ways; our finite minds can’t wrap around the entirety of who He is. Yet He desires a relationship with us, and so He has revealed great parts of Himself to us in many ways. One of those ways is through the Bible. It would be impossible to cover all the attributes of God revealed in the Bible, but here are some key ones that we see, from cover to cover.
First, in the Book of Genesis, God is revealed as the Creator. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” That’s it. No philosophical debate, no list of scientific evidence. Just the absolute, indisputable truth that God created all things. He is the only one who is able to create “something” out of nothing. And, perhaps, most beautifully, we read that God handmade the first man, Adam, out of the dust and gave to him the breath of life. He crafted us so carefully and lovingly, and everything He created exists to glorify Him.
Skipping ahead to the New Testament, we see God revealed in the form of His Son, Jesus Christ. Consider John 14:9: “Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.’” As Christians, we believe in one God in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each member is equal, yet with a unique role. And so, we cannot know God the Father unless we know God the Son – Jesus. As we read in scripture about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, we receive great insight into the heart of God Himself.
Finally, in the Book of Revelation, God is revealed as the judge of the living and the dead. He offers all of us salvation and forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus. But for those who don’t repent, for those who reject the gospel, justice is coming. God is holy, and He cannot allow sin to go unpunished. This attribute of God should lead us to praise Him for His perfection. And it should motivate us to preach the gospel boldly, that many might be saved from the wrath that they deserve. These two attributes of God – His holiness and His mercifulness – are among that most vivid and amazing truths revealed to us in God’s Word.
