Does God See Us All Equally?

“Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.”  Acts 10:34

It is not an easy thing for people to view each other equally. Even though our society pretends to be all about equality and acceptance, the truth is that we are guilty of partiality, each and every day. We judge by appearance – who would you trust more, a man in a suit or a biker outfit? We judge by wealth – would you be more likely to hang out with a company CEO or the homeless person on the street?  We judge by so many other worldly criteria that in the end this does not reflect the most important part of us – the heart. Thankfully, God does not see us as we see each other. He sees us and loves us all equally.

Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The key word here is all. It doesn’t say that some have sinned, but that all of us – rich or poor, young or old, male or female – have failed to measure up. This means that no one can claim to better than another person. We are all far from the perfection of God, and therefore we are all equally in need of a Savior. This truth should humble us and remind us that every person we interact with is essentially just like us – broken, imperfect, and desperate for redemption.

The good news is that though we all are sinners, we all are the recipients of God’s love. Consider 2 Corinthians 5:15: “And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again.” Jesus didn’t just die for the successful, righteous people who go to church every Sunday, He died for the last, the lost, and the least – even those who might never love Him back. His love for humanity does not favor one sinner over another; He invites everyone to accept Him as their Savior and receive the gift of eternity with Him.

Finally, we are all made in the image of God. He gave us all the ability to think, to create, to destroy, and to feel complex emotions – on a level that nothing else in creation can do. Even though we are all unique, with different strengths and weaknesses, we are all valuable in the Kingdom of God. It doesn’t matter what our gender, skin color, or socioeconomic status is; “the rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all” Proverbs 22:2.  So, since we are each treasured by God without discrimination, perhaps we should extend the same all-inclusive attitude toward our peers. He withheld nothing from anyone; so how could we ever withhold His love?
