“Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.”
1 Samuel 12:24
In our Christian walk, it’s natural to wonder if we are serving God in the best way we possibly can. After all, He has given us everything, including eternal life through His Son; the least we can do is devote our lives to Him. But as time goes on, we can find ourselves doubting whether we are following God’s will to its fullest extent. Maybe you’re at a crossroads in your life and are unsure which choice will glorify God the most. Maybe you’ve been teaching the same Sunday school class for years, and you feel like you’ve just hit a wall. Or maybe you’re involved in so many ministries that you wonder if you’re doing any good at all. No matter the situation, all that we truly want to do is to live a life that is pleasing to God. So how can we serve God better?
One of the most powerful and tangible ways to serve God is to serve His people. Mark 10:45 reminds us, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus spent His ministry healing the sick, caring for the outcasts, and teaching them the truth of God in love and He showed us the ultimate example of servitude by taking the excruciating pain of the cross for our sake. When we show love and compassion to those around us, we are reflecting the perfect character of our Creator. We are pointing the entire world to His goodness, and that should be our objective as servants of Christ.
Of course, the most loving thing we can do for others is to share the Gospel. Matthew 5:16 instructs us, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” While meeting the physical needs of people is important and honorable, we must not neglect to give them the greatest treasure of all – Christ. When we reach out in love and make disciples, we are fulfilling our most important purpose in this life – to know God and to make Him known.
Finally, the measure of our service toward God is how we live our everyday lives. Galatians 5:22-23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, our lives will show it. We will treat our families with respect. We will deal with conflict with wisdom and patience. We will exercise forgiveness, even when it hurts. In other words, we will become more like Christ and when we seek Him, serving God will become not a burden, but a joy.
