How Do I Listen To God In My Time of Crisis?

The ability to hear God’s voice is the ultimate secret to victory over any crisis situation. With God’s leading, you can find solutions to problems that confound you. It was God’s voice through Moses that helped the Israelites not just to escape Pharaoh but also cross over the red sea. When they were faced with the indomitable walls of Jericho, it was God’s leading that helped them to know what to do to crash the terrifying wall.

God’s voice helped Isaac to stay in Gerar when the reasonable thing to do was travel out in search of a greener pasture. As a result of his obedience, Isaac became so rich in famine to the extent that his neighbors envied him.

It doesn’t matter how turbulent or challenging the crisis you find yourself, all you need is to discover God’s mind about the situation. The real reason for your frustration is not the crisis itself but your inability to discern the solution which is always available in God.

Unfortunately, one of the most difficult things to do is remain calm in crisis. This makes it difficult to listen or discern God’s voice. One is bound to be restless, impatient and impulsive when one suddenly comes under a crisis situation. This is the reason the Israelites became restless when Pharaoh suddenly appeared behind them. They thought they were completely free when the enemy resurfaced again.

Meanwhile, it is still possible to discern God’s voice in times of crisis. The following are some of the ways we can listen to God in a time of crisis;

  1. Make the Most of the Seasons of Peace. We prepare for war in times of peace. It will be difficult to discern the voice of God in crisis if you are not accustomed with that voice before the time of crisis. You cannot know God using a fire-brigade approach. This is why it is often difficult for many people to listen to God when in crisis. You should never wait for a season of crisis before you intentionally develop your relationship with God. Saul ignored God for a very long time. There was scarcely any record of a time when he intentionally built an altar or prayed. But when he was faced with the army of the philistines, he ran to God only to be faced with utter silence. The Bible says, “When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by the prophets” 1 Samuel 28:5-6. Saul resorted to a witch thereafter.

  1. Pray A Lot. Seasons of crisis are times to increase the tempo of prayer. Spend more time with God in prayer. Pray a lot. This is the pattern that you will see throughout the Bible. When Hannah was being taunted by her rival because she was barren, she went to pray. It was while she was praying that God’s word came to her through Eli, the priest 1 Samuel 18-18. Hezekiah prayed when he was sick until God’s word came through the prophet and an extra fifteen years was added to his life 1 Kings 20:1-7. Prayer will subdue your agitated mind and make it more receptive to the voice of the Spirit.

  1. Declare God’s Word Loudly with Your Mouth. Just like prayer, one of the ways you can listen to God in crisis is declaring the written word loudly with your mouth especially words that are directed related to the situation. By standing on God’s word, declaring it loudly with your mouth, your anxious mind will become calm, you will grow in confidence from the reassurance that comes from God’s word and then, you will begin to hear God beyond the written word. Declaring God’s word this way takes your eyes off the situation and focuses it on the ability and power of God.

  1. Be Still. When the Israelites were perplexed beside the red sea, Moses told them, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today…” Exodus 14:13. This same word is found in Psalm 46:11; “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” There is power is being still even though it is difficult when you are under pressure. But if you apply yourself to God’s word and decide to obey and remain still, it will unlock the needed solution to the crisis at hand. Isaiah 30:15 says, “In quietness and confident trust is your strength.” Through stillness, Moses perceived God’s mind and led God’s people through the sea.

God has a solution to your crisis if you will apply yourself and choose to listen to Him instead of getting worried and worked up.
