What is The Gospel?

The world has a wonderful gift from the almighty God called ‘The Gospel’. The gospel is also called the ‘Good News’ and indeed it is good news packed for whoever is willing and ready to receive it. The Gospel was planned in Heaven and saints of the Old Testament were informed about it through God’s prophets. The prophets relayed the message that God will send a person who would fulfill the role of prophets (Deuteronomy 18:14 – 22), become a priest (Psalm 110:1 – 4) and be a King (Psalm 2). This was to give birth to a new covenant which Jesus declared at the time of the Passover meal (Luke 22:20) with His disciples and the apostle Paul reflects on it in 1 Corinthians 11:25.

At the right time, God fulfilled His promise of the Good News as detailed in the first four books of the New Testament; Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These books are therefore called ‘Gospels’ as they give details of the what the Good News are. These authors claim to have lived with Jesus Christ and write as witnesses of what they experienced in person about Him.

God offered the Gospel freely to the world, which means that you don’t work for a gift. You can’t earn it, you can’t buy it, and you can’t work for it.

What ‘The Gospel’ Entails

In no particular order, some of what the Gospels record is outlines as followings:

  1. The genealogy of Jesus Christ and an angel giving details on how Jesus will come to the world, and His purpose of coming. He was to be born from the house of David by a virgin with the purpose of saving His people from their sins Matthew 1:21.

  2. Throughout His life, Jesus Christ demonstrated the love God has for mankind through healing the sick, performing miracles and raising the dead.

  3. Jesus Christ revealed the deep things on life after deaths pertaining to Heaven and the requirements of making it there. He also spoke about the default mankind destination of Hell. However, Jesus spoke more about Hell than He did about Heaven, making it clear that every humanly possible effort should be made, even to the point of cutting off one’s hand Matthew 5:30, just to escape damnation in Hell.

  4. The death of Jesus Christ, which was the main purpose He came to the world. In 1 Corinthians 15:1 – 8, the Apostle Paul mentions the death, burial, resurrection and appearance of the resurrected Jesus Christ as the Gospel he preaches. Prophecies from the Old Testament were fulfilled in the manner in which Jesus Christ was crucified and how He would resurrect.

Believers of the new covenant are enjoying the promised benefits of the free Gospel of Jesus Christ until the day of His return. This includes the direct access each believer has to the God, the gift of peace Acts 20:24 and the assurance of free salvation for Gentiles and Jews.

The Gospel is indeed free yet it must be maintained to remain valid in an individual’s life. There are mandatory commandments or rituals to observe and these are documented in the entire Holy Bible. Believers are required to work out their salvation in fear and trembling Philippians 2:12.

The Gospel came to the world at a very high price to God. Thus everyone that takes the free gift of the Gospel should comply with the conclusive requirement of glorifying God the body (1 Corinthians 6:20).
