The question Who Is Jesus looks quite straightforward and it is easy to simply go on Google and get all the information we need about Him. It is easy to regurgitate everything we have learned about His Jewish history in church or religious gatherings and just assume that we know who Jesus is. One might even get pissed off with a topic like this and never attempt to read because of the subtle assumption that we already know who He is.
But that is the undoing of several Jewish people around the world today who are still anticipating the coming of the Messiah who left the world more than 2000 years ago. As far as they were concerned, the Messiah could not have come in the way and manner in which Jesus came into the world. It is also the undoing of millions of people around the world today who have not put their faith in Jesus Christ. They have heard about Him and could probably say a few things about Him but they don’t know Him.
It Takes Revelation to Know Jesus
Jesus visited his hometown and the Bible says, “…He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them…”( Mark 6:6). Why? Their natural knowledge of Him clouded them from discovering who He is and they couldn’t put their faith or trust in Him to receive a miracle as He did in other places. They were too familiar with Jesus. The Bible says,
“And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us? So, they were offended at Him” (Mark 6:2-3).
Answering the question of who Jesus is, goes beyond being brilliant or being able to surf the internet and give a fantastic answer, it requires revelation. So many people around the world have information about Him but very few experience the transformation that comes through Him because they don’t have a revelation of Him. It would take the Holy Spirit to reveal the person of Jesus to us if we are going to know Him.
In Matthew 16:15-17, Jesus asked the disciples, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Peter’s answer sounds so simple and basic but “Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”We cannot attain a true understanding of the simplest information about Jesus without revelation. We may know it with our heads but it will never transform our hearts. This is why enumerating who Jesus is, goes beyond the ability to do research, it takes revelation.
Seven Insights About Who Jesus Is:
So, who is Jesus?
Jesus is the Christ (Matthew 16:16). There were and are several Jesuses in Israel but there is something that distinguishes Jesus from the rest. He is Christ, the Messiah or the Anointed One. In other words, He is the One whom God has distinguished by with a special anointing to accomplish a unique assignment. Acts 10:38 says, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” Several individuals were anointed by God through history but no one carries the anointing in the measure of that of Christ.
Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 16:16). The concept of Jesus being the Son of God is one of the most controversial truths about Jesus especially among the Jews who believe Jesus, being human is claiming equality with God (John 5:18) and among Muslims who believe being the son of a person has to be through biological means and God is too high and holy for such. But Jesus’ life on earth proved that He was indeed God’s Son. He lived like God performing mysterious signs, wonders and miracles. His sonship restores our original identity in Eden and that men can live like gods on earth (Psalm 82:6).
Jesus is the Savior of the world (John 1:29). The angel told Joseph to name Him Jesus because He is going to save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21). Sin is the greatest problem of the human race. It is the source of all other crises that we experience in the world and this is essentially why Jesus came to the world; to save us from our sins.
Jesus is the Mediator between man and God (1 Timothy 2:5). Sin created a very big gulf between us and God. So big was the gulf that all our works of righteousness couldn’t fill it up. We were at a distance from God. We were separated but Jesus showed up and bridged the gap. Now, we have free and unhindered access to God because of Him. He broke the wall of separation so that we can now come confidently to the throne of grace.
Jesus is Life (John 14:6). Many people define life in terms of their wealth, riches, connections, certificates, positions and power. Others think of life in terms of how much of pleasure they can derive from it but the scriptures made it clear that it is only in Christ that we can find life. It doesn’t matter the amount of pleasure we give to our bodies or the number of things we can acquire, there is a longing in the hearts of men and women that can only be satisfied through the knowledge of God through Jesus Christ. And He doesn’t just give us abundant life here on earth, He also gives us eternal life hereafter.
Jesus is the most powerful individual in heaven and earth (Philippians 2:9-11). There are leaders or presidents of nations of the world today with so much power either in terms of military or monetary powers but Jesus through times remains the most powerful individual in the history of not just the earth but also the heavens. He had the power to suspend nature (Matthew 14:22-36), to come back to life after death, and heal sicknesses and diseases. By His power, the arrogance of Herod was dealt with when an angel struck Him and worms ate him up alive (Acts 12:21-23). After the resurrection of Jesus, He told His disciples, “All power in heaven and on earth is given to me” (Matthew 28:18). Anyone seeking any form of power should resort to Him.
Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6). Truth is becoming subjective as the world becomes more civilized. Different ideologies are coming up every day. Godly values and convictions are being re-examined based on what constitutes the truth. But the Bible is unequivocal about what is the Truth. Truth is not just a concept, a statement or an ideology, it is a Person – Jesus Christ. As we know Him as the Truth, we can trust the words that come from Him as true even when they go contrary to the world’s concept of truth. We become sanctified and separated from the contamination that is in the world as we hold on to His word as the truth (John 17:17).
The more we look at God’s word, the more we discover who Jesus is. We must remain committed to discovering and rediscovering Him because it is easy to get distracted and lose sight of Him. Our spiritual sanity is preserved only as we remain committed to who Jesus is.
