How Can I Be At Peace?

We are faced daily with things that threaten our peace both from the internal and external environments. People are depressed, diseased, sick, sad, and heartbroken. We hear news of terror, earthquake, corruption, recession, and all kinds of evil that puts us in fear.

The biblical word for peace, “shalom” does not mean the absence of challenges but the ability to keep calm in the face of chaos as a result of an inward awareness of the presence of God.

So, the question to ask in times like this is, how can I be at peace in the midst of challenges?

  1. Know the One who is Peace. Jesus Christ is not just the Prince of peace, He is our Peace. “For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation.” Ephesians 2:14-15 NKJV.

We may never experience true peace until we know Him. Peace is not a feeling. Peace is a person, Jesus Christ.

  1. Repent and Forsake Sin. Sin brings guilt, fear, and ultimately deprives us of peace. When the first man sinned, he lost his confidence; his peace. He began to run away from God presence. He was afraid. We must confess and forsake every known sin if we hope to have his peace in our hearts.

  2. Have a Long Term Perspective of your Challenges. When you look at your challenges in the light of eternity, you will always be at peace. When Jesus returns, an end will come to all our woes and everything that threatens our peace. All our tears will be wiped away. This gives us peace.

  3. Be Prayerful. In prayer, we get that opportunity to share our deepest concerns with the Lord Himself. We are able to cast our all our cares on Him. Philippians 4:7 tells us what happens when we pray. It says, “…and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” NKJV

  4. Feed Deeply and Regularly on the Word. When we read and meditate in the word, we are reminded of His promises. We receive inspiration for our situations in His word.

  5. Don’t Worry. This is not just an admonition; it is a command. We must learn to live one day at a time. Matthew 6:34 says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” NKJV

  6. Be Grateful. Gratitude flushes out bitterness, fear, and hopelessness from our heart. It helps to see the positive in negativity. An attitude of gratitude will always fill us with peace.

We can be at peace despite the times. This is the will of God for us in Christ Jesus.
