How Can I Have a Relationship with God?

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you…”

 James 4:8

Many people think of God as some distant being, with no interest in the world he created. But God’s character is not one of indifference; it is one of love. The Bible tells us that God desires a relationship with the people He created. In fact, it’s our entire purpose for existence. God created us to be with Him and enjoy Him forever. So how can we have that relationship? The answer is simple: through His Son, Jesus Christ.

See, we live in a broken world. We were made to be in perfect harmony with our Creator, but there is one thing that separates us from Him: our sin. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Our God is a just and a holy God; He cannot let sin and imperfection into His sight. We are, by nature, rebellious against God. but in His mercy, God sent His Son to take the punishment that we deserve. Standing in the gap between God and man, Jesus Christ took the wrath of God upon Himself, so that we could be brought near.

The Bible says that without Christ, our relationship to God is enemy, but when we place our faith in Jesus, we are made friends. Even more than that, we become God’s children. John 1:12 says, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” How amazing is that? The same God who created the heavens and the earth is the God who desires to adopt you as His own. Jesus Christ died for the atonement of your sins, and he rose again so that you could enjoy life with Him forever. This is the gospel, and it makes possible what was once impossible: a fully restored relationship with God.

Jesus has done all the work for us; all we need to do is believe. He is always pursuing us, giving us opportunities to decide whether we will cultivate our relationship with God or let it fizzle out. We can cultivate our relationship with God by spending time with Him daily. By reading and meditating on His Word, we can come to know more about Him and ourselves. And by coming to Him in prayer, we show that we are trusting Him with our lives.

This is the most fulfilling, most rewarding, most important relationship you will ever have. God is the perfect Father. He is more caring than your best friend. He is more loyal than a brother. He is more loving than any spouse. He knows you, and He desires for you to know Him. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Will you come to Him today?
