How Can I Please God?

It is the goal of every believer in God to please Him. Unbelievers also look for His favour. No one wants to be at loggerhead with God because a lot of benefits are attached to pleasing God.

Proverbs 16:7 says, “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

Isaac exemplified this. God made his enemies to be at peace with Him. Abimelech and his people had chased him out of their land but they came back and made a treaty with him. When they came back to Isaac, they confessed, “We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you.  So we said, Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you.” Genesis 26:28.

Enoch remains one of the few human beings that was spared from death because he pleased God Hebrews 11:5.

Moreover, a lot of dangers are attached to displacing God. Hebrews 10:31 says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

Each time the Israelites did something that displeases God, they always died in the thousands. God’s displeasure towards a man brings a lot of evil. This is why it is important to know how one can please God.

How then can I please God?

Have Faith In God

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” Hebrews 11:6.  This is the first step towards pleasing God; putting our faith in Him. This faith first talks about believing that He is revealed in the human form in the person of Jesus to save us from our sins. He died and rose again so that we may have eternal life.  This faith also talks of that daily, confident rest in His love and faithfulness. It is believing His word in the face of contrary conditions.  This was how the saints pleased Him. Abraham pleased Him because he moved at God’s commandment even when he didn’t know where he was going.

Eschew Evil

This implies a complete abstinence from sin and anything that displeases God. God hates sin. He is so holy, He cannot behold iniquity. When we sin, He is grieved. We cannot possibly please Him when we keep doing things that grieves Him. John 9:31 says, “Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.”  Psalm 24:3-5 also says, “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.”  God has a special attraction to those who cleanse themselves from sin and all kinds of evil. We must get rid of every form of sin in our lives if we want to please Him.

Become God’s Friend

How do we become God’s intimate friend? We become His friend by spending more time with Him than what an average Christian will do. We get to know, love and trust people that we spend more time with. It is the same with God. The more the time spent with Him, the closer we get to Him.  Moses was God’s friend because he spent a lot of time with Him. Exodus 33:11 tells us that “the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” This is why when Mariam and others spoke against Moses, the Lord defended him. Moses had pleased the Lord. He was His friend. “If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings; and he sees the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?” Numbers 12:6-8.

If you want to please God, begin to spend more time with Him. Cut down on the time spent with the things of the world and invest it into developing your relationship with God. We can please Him.
