How Does God Give Us A Free Will?

There are people, including Christians, who see God as a tyrant; an imposter whose will we must do whether we like it or not. Such Christians make us believe that they are under pressure by God to do certain things and there is nothing they can do about it.

While it is true that God has a will for us in every situation; which is good. Romans 12:2 says, God’s will is good, acceptable and perfect. However, God does not enforce His will on us. He reveals His will to us and leaves us to decide on what is best for us. He has given us a free will to do what is best for us. This is revealed right from our creation when man was given the liberty to choose to eat the forbidden fruit or not.

The following shows how God gives us a free will as humans;

  1. He Created Us In His Image (Genesis 1:26-27): This implies that we possess His nature and characteristics. We are His offspring. We have the ability, unlike angels, to dominate, exercise authority and take independent decisions at will like God over other creatures.

  2. He Shows Us the options that we have and the consequences (Deuteronomy 30:15,19). God was appealing to the free will of man and asking him to use it when He told him the implications of eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. If He has not given us a free will, there is no point showing us the right and wrong with their attendant consequences.

  3. He Want Sons Not Robots. Robots are programmed to perform a particular task. They do not do otherwise. Without freewill, we will simply be like robots destined to behave and live in a particular manner. But God wants mature sons and daughters who make informed decisions after careful consideration. This is why even Jesus had to choose to obey His heavenly Father.

  4. He makes Us Responsible for our actions: God will not be responsible for our actions or inaction. He will even hold us responsible for the decisions we make. This is why God didn’t accept the excuse of Adam when He said Eve was responsible. He was punished for his irresponsibility.

  5. He Gave Us A Will To Decide on What His Best For Us: The human will is the most powerful ability given to man by God. It is so powerful that man can use his own will against the will of God. God will work and reveal Himself in the life of man only to the extent the man allows Him. For example, it was the will of God for all the children of Israel who left Egypt to enter the Promised Land but they were unwilling to go ahead and inherit the land. They kept looking back to Egypt and they all eventually perished in the wilderness.

If God had not given us a free will, then all men should be saved by now. God would have enforced salvation on all men. God might have a will for you but you must exercise your will to be in His will. Your will must align with God’s will in order to experience God’s best. We must choose what He has chosen for us.

Isaiah 1:19 says, “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land” NKJV. The will of God is for you to eat the good of the land. But you have to be willing and obedient to eat the good of the land.
