How Has God Given Us All Faith?

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

2 Corinthians 5.7

Faith is something that we, as Christians, all strive for. It is faith that first leads us to repent and believe in Christ. It is faith that encourages us to trust Him during all the trials of life and it is faith that keeps us moving toward the ultimate goal of heaven.  Faith does not come naturally to us, nor can we earn it on our own. It’s something that God gives us as we seek to follow Him. So, what are some of the ways that God gives us faith, each and every day?

Romans 10.17 says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” God’s Word is full of promises, promises toward us, promises towards people of the past, and promises of things to come. We can look back on God’s faithfulness to His people; how He rescued Noah from the flood, how He brought the Israelites out of slavery, how He delivered Daniel from the lion’s den, and so much more. When we bear witness to God’s awesome power in the past, we can be filled with confidence that He can deliver in the same way today because God never changes.

Another way that God gives us faith is somewhat surprising, He gives us faith through our trials. James 1.3 “For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” The very definition of faith is belief in that which is unseen.  In order for God to build our faith, we must first go through a period of doubting and maybe even anxiety. It’s only human to be anxious when hardships come our way, but when we learn to give all control to God and to trust Him, He will increase our faith so that the next time, we hold onto our anxieties a little less tightly.

Finally, it’s important to remember that it’s not about the size of our faith, but about the strength. Consider Luke 17.5-6: “The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ and the Lord said, ‘If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you.’” We may not have all the answers. We may not be able to see the future or make decisions without fear of the outcome, but if, deep inside, we believe with all of our hearts in the power of a sovereign God, we can do anything. Jesus has assured us that though trouble will come, He gives us all that we need to surpass it. Therefore, we should constantly be asking God to grant us more faith, stronger faith, so that we can live for Him regardless of what might stand in our way. He has given us so many reasons to trust Him, and He will give us even more if only we ask.
